Language Arts: Unit 5 in our Wonders text concentrates on "understanding the world around us". Stories about people caring for one another, finding good solutions to problems, and learning from the past will be read & discussed. Visualizing and summarizing continue to be important reading strategies that we use to help us understand the many different types of genre covered this trimester. Realistic fiction, biographies, expository text, tall tales, and legends in particular. Organization and sentence fluency will be our main focus when writing.
Mathematics: We are now working in Chapter 14 (Measurement). We have just finished customary units of measure, concentrating on length, capacity, and weight. Conversions from one unit to the next will be practiced... use of a conversion chart is acceptable. Multi-step problem solving applying measurement concepts will be carried out. As always, explaining our thinking in writing - along with checking for the reasonableness of our answers is very important.
Science: Electricity and Force & Motiion are our last two areas of study this year. Both of these units are very "hands-on", consequently students will be investigating through partner and group activities. Static electricity and current electricity will be explored. We will be switching classes for the Force & Motion unit. Miss Zurek will be teaching our class "Force & Motion" and I will have her class join me for their "Electricity" discoveries. Small in-class assessments will be used to evaluate student understanding.
Social Studies: We will wrap up our school year with the study of the West. Commonalities along with diversities between states in the West will be identified. An overview of the region's history, geography, and economy will help us determine the importance of this region within our country. The fourth grade geography bee will take place at the end of May.
